Easy and Affordable Bloom Bar

DIY bloom bars have become very popular as an interactive activity at baby showers, birthday parties, and more! These can seem intimidating but with a little bit of preparation and planning you can pull together a lovely bloom bar without blowing the budget.

Where do I get the flowers?

The host of this party ordered all of the blooms from Sam's club to be budget friendly and get a bulk assortment. For events like this, buying from your local grocery store or Trader Joe's can save time and money. Amazon also has fresh flowers you could check out.

How many stems do I order?

Each guest likely will use 5-9 stems per bouquet if you are going for a simple look. This can vary based on your budget and overall vision for the bloom bar. I recommend ordering a couple of large focal flowers to fill space (1-2 stems), a couple of filler flowers (3-5 stems), and a large greenery to support the flowers (1-2 stems).

Hydrangeas are good focal flowers but require adequate hydration as they are prone to wilting. Gerber Daisies and Carnations come in a variety of colors and are quite durable. Lemon Leaf and Silver Dollar Eucalyptus have large leaves and are great greenery accents.

How do I prep the flowers?

The flowers would ideally be delivered or purchased the day before the event to maximize freshness and longevity. You want to make sure all flowers are placed in fresh water and opened from all packaging. Before placing stems in the water, remove excess leaves and dead petals and cut stems at a 45 degree angle. Some stems can be very thick and will need garden shears or a sharp floral knife. Prepping ahead of time allows your flowers to drink clean water and limit exposure to bacteria caused from leaves and extra debris.

How do I present the flowers?

To save money and provide a personal touch to the event, ask friends and family to provide vases they already have to display the flowers in. This gives an eclectic feel and saves you the time of renting or building a bucket display that will only be used once.

How do guests arrange the flowers?

Consider assembling a bouquet and setting it out on display to give attendess and idea of what to make. I love using a bouqet wrap that keeps the stems contained and holds the shape. Pre-cutting the ribbon also saves time and reduces the line at the bloom bar.
